Spooky baked goods raise much needed funds for brave Oscar

November 1, 2019

Every year, Thomson & Bancks Solicitors raise awareness for its chosen charity by inviting staff to bake Halloween-themed cakes in an attempt to be crowned the firm’s spookiest baker.

This year marked the 5th consecutive year of the contest and helped to raise much-needed funds for Oscar; an incredibly brave 5-year-old boy, who in December 2018 was diagnosed with high risk T-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia.

Halloween Bake-Off – Oscar’s story

Since December 2018, Oscar has spent 8 months in hospital undergoing intense chemotherapy treatments with the goal that he would receive a lifesaving stem cell transplant. Oscar found a donor earlier this year only to hear the heart-breaking news that after further chemotherapy, full body radiotherapy and three months of gruelling recovery post-transplant, the leukaemia had returned.

Hand in Hand for Oscar

Oscar’s family were told by specialists that it is unlikely that there are any curative treatment options left that are available on the NHS. Currently, the NHS can typically only offer a second transplant to patients twelve months on from their first. With the nature and rarity of Oscar’s disease, the family simply may not have that long to keep his disease at bay.

The family ask that people join ‘Oscar’s army’ by helping to raise the funds needed to partake in medical trials that could save his life. The target based on specialist information and the trial in question was £500,000 – a target reached thanks to kind donations from many, awareness events like the Thomson & Bancks Halloween Bake Off and the ‘Hand in Hand for Oscar’ campaign driven by his amazing family and friends.

Halloween Bake-Off – Trick or treat, smell my feet, give me something good to eat!

Once again, the staff did a great job in providing a wonderfully gruesome selection of cakes. It’s become very clear with every new Halloween Bake Off contest that staff at Thomson & Bancks have a skele-ton of fun creating their entries. Below we take a look at those entries, before announcing the winners and the money raised.

Have you picked your poison? The competition was tight and selecting 1st, 2nd and 3rd place was scarily tough but without further ado (drum roll please), the winners of the Thomson & Bancks Halloween Bake Off 2019 are as follows:

  • 3rd place – Lily Willcocks, Spook-tacular
  • 2nd place – Grace Adams, Haunted House
  • 1st place – Sam Hawkins, The Scream

We are extremely pleased to also announce that the Halloween Bake Off raised over £166.50 towards Oscar’s target and we would like to encourage readers to follow his story and donate to the cause or fundraise through the family’s chosen charity, Grace Kelly Childhood Cancer Trust.

Until next year, creep it real this Halloween and let the ghoul times roll!
